Chapter Nine

“You know, I never thought anyone could be scarier than Kit,” Talon muttered as the elevator opened to the floor Lilianna stayed on. The line of cells didn’t bode well when it came to the atmosphere.

“She’s just a kid,” Asher argued.

“A kid who can turn shades into toys as she calls them. A kid who can erase everything a person is and force them to obey. Oh, yeah, also a kid who can turn living things into dust.” Talon shuddered. “She’s fucking terrifying.”

“I’m going to suggest you not say any of that to her,” I said. “I feel like that could get us off on the wrong foot.”

Talon crossed his arms with a pout. “I’m not stupid, you know. I am able to keep my mouth shut when I need to.”

Asher and I both gave Talon looks full of incredulity. The Talon I knew never kept his mouth shut, and he often bore the consequences of that.

He pouted, crossing his arms. “I really can—I just usually don’t want to. Trust me, even my kitsune gives wendigos a lot of space. She is one I have no desire to fuck with. I will be on my best behavior. Gold star student over here.”

I wasn’t sure I believed him, but we didn’t have many options. Kit had reached out ahead of time to let Lilianna know we were coming. I wasn’t sure if she’d agreed or not, but all I could hope was that she wouldn’t do the whole living beings to dust thing the moment we walked in.

We passed the empty cells, lining both sides of the long hallway that led to her room. The doors were glass, allowing a view inside at the sparse white walls.

“What were they doing here?” I asked.

“This was the floor dedicated to the Corrander project,” Asher explained. “They had Lilianna here, turning shades into mindless soldiers.”

“And we’re supposed to trust her now?” I closed my hands into fists. “Is this a case of her daddy getting her out of trouble?”

Asher shook his head. “Not exactly. Lilianna was raised in the North Tower. She had no exposure to the outside world, nothing but the scientists and the Warden. They twisted her, turned her into what they wanted, lied to her. When she realized that, she picked a side, and it wasn’t Larkwood’s.”

“So now we’re all supposed to just ignore everything she’s done,” Talon muttered. “Just one big happy family, complete with the psychotic little sister who turns people into zombies.”

“Toys, not zombies.” The voice made me freeze, and there in front of us, in the doorway at the end, stood Lilianna.

Somehow, she looked even more terrifying than she had before. It was probably because she wasn’t in a classroom full of cooking shades. This time, she was in her element, surrounded by empty cells and the ghosts of the people lost here.

Talon gulped but didn’t take back his words.

“Kit said you’d talk to us.” I took a step forward to take her attention off Talon and his fatal condition of pure stupidity.
